Meet the Team
Anna Austin, VMD
Founder & Veterinarian, Huntersville Veterinary Clinic
Dr. Austin has loved animals for as long as she can remember. Growing up in North Carolina, she spent her childhood exploring the outdoors and caring for her pets, which led to a lifelong dream of becoming a veterinarian. Her passion and dedication were evident early on—she was an award-winning participant in the NC 4-H Horse Program, earning the title of NC 4-H Horseman of the Year in 1997.
Dr. Austin attended North Carolina State University as a Park Scholar, one of the university’s most competitive merit-based scholarships recognizing academic achievement and leadership. She majored in Zoology with a minor in Animal Science and graduated summa cum laude. Her studies took her from the barn to the sea—most notably to Belize, where she conducted research on the Bluehead Wrasse, a tropical fish that can change sex, culminating in an honors thesis on hormonal control in marine species.
She earned her veterinary degree (VMD) from the prestigious University of Pennsylvania School of Veterinary Medicine—fun fact: it's the only veterinary school in the U.S. to grant a VMD instead of a DVM. During her training, she gained diverse experience through externships in large animal medicine, racehorse care, and rural veterinary services, earning awards in surgery and sports medicine.
After completing an internship at Blue Ridge Equine Clinic in Virginia, Dr. Austin returned to her home state, working as a small animal veterinarian in Salisbury and Mooresville for nearly a decade. In 2020, the pandemic brought a temporary pause to her clinical work as she stayed home to care for her newborn and help her older children with remote learning. During that time, she continued her medical career as a writer, but missed hands-on veterinary care and the connection with clients and their pets.
In 2023, Dr. Austin returned to clinical work through relief services across the region, serving over 10 veterinary practices. Inspired to create something of her own, she founded Huntersville Veterinary Clinic with a mission to provide compassionate, low-stress care and education-driven service for pets and their people.
Dr. Austin is a USDA-accredited veterinarian and an active member of the American Veterinary Medical Association, North Carolina Veterinary Medical Association, and the Veterinary Information Network.
She lives in Cornelius with her husband, three children, and their very spoiled French Bulldog/Yorkie mix, Cookie. When she’s not in the clinic, she enjoys reading, traveling with her family, and attempting to train Cookie (with mixed results).
